Musus Umbra's Miscellaneous Freeware
Last updates:
See also the 'Mostly Finished Things' page for some freeware that isn't quite finished enough for me to be happy about including it here. That's where you'll find WebMan, for instance.
This is a selection of the (rather ecletic) freeware that I have produced over the years.
I tend to write applications on an ad-hoc basis as a need arises. These applications are some of the few that may be usable by someone other than me :-)
As is usual with my stuff, everything here comes with source code.
- FilerHRun 1.21 [23K] 32bit compatible
A simple module that provides an alternative command to Filer_Run which is
much better suited to some tasks than Filer_Run itself is.
The module also provides *IfTask and *IfNTask commands
which can be used to execute a command if a named task is (or is not) running.
The main function of FilerHRun is, however, to provide an alternative to
Filer_Run. Specifically, FilerHRun has the following advantages over Filer_Run:
- Doesn't check the shift key at all.
- Can be used for any command, not just to run files/apps.
- Doesn't offer the file (if any) to already running tasks.
FilerHRun is ideal for starting tasks, eg.
*IfNTask "Acorn WebServe" FilerHRun <WebServe$Dir>
My thanks to Philip Ludlam for making FilerHRun 32bit compatible.
Update (27 Feb 2006) Dave Higton pointed
out a mistake in the packaging of the FilerHRun archive.
Hopefully I've fixed this now but, just in case something went wrong (I have no RISC OS
machines running at the moment, so repackaging RO software is not quite 'fire and forget' ;-),
you can download the old archive here.

- Museum 2.01 [10K]
A simple application to create (and load) an HTML 'links' document from your various browsers' history files.
At present, Museum supports Fresco, Browse and ArcWeb histories.
Museum is also available as a VIX for Voyager users from the VIXes, etc. page

- SpeedyDraw 2.01 [8K]
This is a simple patch that passes some calls to the Draw module on to Computer Concepts' GDraw module, which is appreciably faster.
To use it, you'll need a copy of the GDraw and DitherExt modules (which are supplied in !ArtWorks, Impression, !AWviewer, etc.).
This patch is a replacement for Charles Baylis' original SpeedyDraw patch (which is also supplied).

- MusLook 1.02 [25K]
This is a replacement for !NewLook that uses far less valuable memory (about 100Kb less RMA) whilst still offering high-res. sprites and 3D windows.
NB: This patch is only for RISC OS 3.1 machines.
Although the instructions with the patch assume that you are using the new style !Boot (like a RiscPC's), the patch is usable without it: you'll just have to work out how to install it yourself.
NB: version 1.00 contained a couple of small (not serious) mistakes. These are now fixed. The archive contains instructions on how to 'upgrade' to the current version if you're already using 1.00
NB: version 1.01 also contained a couple of errors in the help file (concerning random backdrops). Hopefully these are fixed now.

- Modem Prodder 1.15 [10K]
This is a rather neat modem prodder that gives you the chance to
automatically prod your modem back awake if it goes to sleep
during a down/up-load.
(Also available as a VIX (for Voyager users) from the Vixes and Voyager patches page).

- PollFreq 2.00 [8K]
This is a simple, elegant, efficient, sexy little polling frequency monitor
that makes it easy to see how loaded the Wimp is.
NEW (26 Jan 1999): Rewritten from scratch. Better average polls/sec figure.

- IconThang 3.52 [47K] (RISC OS 2 / 3 compatable)
IconThang is a cute (highly configurable) little application launcher that sits at the top of your desktop and tries not to be noticed.
However, should you click upon one of its icons, a menu will appear, allowing you to quickly start your favourite applications.
Click here to see an example of Iconthang in use:
I wrote Iconthang over three years ago... and it's still in use today!
New in 3.52: I finally found and fixed the strange bug that caused directories not to open properly if you shift-clicked them in a menu.

- StrongTest 1.42 [24K] (RISC OS 3, and only of any real use if you write StrongHelp manuals :-)
StrongTest attempts to check that all the links in your StrongHelp manuals actually 'work' and that there are no pages that cannot be reached in some way.
It's not perfect, but due to feedback from a select few (thanks Gerph!), I've dusted off the source code and am about to rewrite!
As this utility has a rather limited 'audience', I'd be glad of any comments...

- MusMus (RISC OS 3, needs the new !Boot)
MusMus is a simple to use font/texture configuration program for use with RiscPCs and older machines that are now using the new (nested) WindowManager and new RiscPC style !Boot (eg. from the AUCD4).
