Lady Charis' FAQ

Welcome to my Frequently Asked Questions page,
in which I'll try to answer the questions I'm most often asked!

Feel free to mail me with any other questions...
they might even wind up on this page in future.

Unlike most of the other pages on this site, this one doesn't degrade too gracefully on browsers that don't support tables... Sorry!

Q

Why 'Charis'?

A

Charis is a name that my husband, Adny, and I came up with when we were first together, for the Lady of the Castle Verelanthe...

Q
Where or what is Verelanthe?

A

The place where Charis and her Lord, Serath (Adny) live.

At the moment the physical location is Newcastle upon Tyne.

Its imaginary location, however, is somewhere in the middle of rolling hills, with a river running through the valley beneath it.

Q
Who makes your clothes?

A

I make some of my clothes, particularly the Gothic ones, as I don't see the point in paying lots of money for them when I can make exactly what I want for lots less :)

Q
What music do you like?

A

I mostly listen to EBM, German Darkwave and Mediaeval Folk/Pop music these days, with a bit of more boistrous music thrown in for good measure. Some of my favourite bands are Saltatio Mortis, In Extremo, Subway To Sally, VNV Nation, Covenant and my very favourite: Rammstein!

Tormented Radio plays a lot of music I like!

Q
How many times have you been to Whitby?

A

I've been to the Folk Festival there about three times (I used to be a folkie, but I'm less so now) and the Goth Festival three times also.

I've been to a couple of the Whitby Goth Weekends as a visitor, just to spend money at the Bizzare Bazzar!

I've visited a couple of times 'out of season' as it were, too, when it is a lot quieter. It's a beautiful place, whatever the season!

Q
OK, so what is Goth, then?

A

There is the superficial set of values, the clothes, make-up, style and so on; then there is the deeper set.

Most of the Goths I've met seem to be very individualistic, not just in their manner of dress. They all seem to dislike 'the modern world' to some extent, and use the Goth scene as an escape from this.

Another thing I've noticed is the number of Goths who belong to other 'minority groups'. For instance, many (but by no means all) of the Goths I know are Pagan, or of some other open-minded religion.

Despite all this, some Goths do seem to have the opinion... (to paraquote): I am the one true Goth. Thou shalt have no other Goth but me, for I am a jealous Goth!

Q
What do you like about being a Goth?

A

I like the freedom to be myself, to dress how I want, etc.

The elegance is wonderful; I'd always wanted to be able to wear big ball gowns and pretend to be a princess as a kid; well, Goth gives me the chance!

Q
When did you become a Goth?

A

I first realised I was a Goth in my second year at Uni (age 20ish), after I met Adny.

However, it was more like realising that there was a name to the way I had been all my life... that there were others out there who felt the same way as I did.

Q
Why did you choose to become a Goth?

A

It chose me, rather than the other way around!

Goth best embodied the way I felt, how I'd wanted to dress all those years, but had never realised that I could, and so on.

Q
Do you think you will be a Goth for life?

A

I expect that I will still have the Gothic frame of mind and love of elegance, especially in clothing, for life.

Mind you, I don't expect that I'll still be wearing white face make-up and swirly black eyeliner when I'm eighty!

Q
How did you get interested in wicca?

A

It started when I heard some music by the band Inccubus Succubus and thought that it was saying much of what I felt about life and religion.

Like the whole 'goth' thing, it fitted in well with what I'd already realised I felt, but hadn't had a name to put to.

Q
What is your favourite style of dress?

A

A long black velvet skirt and a black top of some sort is my usual attire.

This web-site has quite a few pictures of my slightly less usual attire :)

Q
What's your favoutite colour?
Why?

A

Green.

I just like it. It's such a 'natural' colour.

And, of course, it also suits red-heads really well :)

Q
Do you drink blood?

A

Not as a rule, no :)

I have been Vegetarian for many years now, ever since meeting Adny.

It started as expedience - it was more convenient to not eat meat - but then, following the Wiccan rede of 'an harm it none...' I decided that it would be morally wrong of me to eat meat, also.

Q
Where do you like to visit?

A

Yorkshire.

It's by far and away the most beautiful county I've ever been to.

Even Sussex (my original home-county) isn't as all around beautiful, although I do still miss it sometimes.

Northumberland is very pretty, and I have a definite soft spot for some of the places in and around Newcastle; in particular, Jesmond Dene and Tynemouth.

A few years ago I visited Edinburgh (for the now sadly missed 'Finsternis' club night) and I think it is a most beautiful city.

Q
Do you like towns or countryside?

A

I like both, but I feel more at home in the country, or at the sea-side.

Q
Can I see pictures of you with no clothes on?!

A

No!

Q
Will you marry me?

A

I don't think Adny would appreciate that ;)
